How to Compress a Photo to 100KB or 200KB for Online Applications

Whether you are applying for a university, a government job, or an e-Visa, you will likely encounter a strict file size limit. Modern smartphones take photos that are 3MB to 5MB in size. However, online application portals usually require files to be under 200KB, and sometimes even under 100KB or 50KB.

Why Do Portals Require Small File Sizes?

Government and institutional databases process millions of applications. Storing millions of 5MB photos requires expensive servers and causes pages to load slowly for reviewers. By forcing applicants to compress their photos to 100KB or 200KB, they save massive amounts of storage space and bandwidth.

The Problem with Generic Image Compressors

If you google "image compressor", you will find many tools that reduce file size. But beware: most of them work by drastically shrinking the physical dimensions of the image (e.g., from 4000x3000 pixels down to 400x300 pixels).

If your application explicitly requires a photo that is 35x45mm or 600x600 pixels, generic compressors will ruin those dimensions, causing your application to be rejected.

How to Compress Safely (Step-by-Step)

To safely reduce file size while keeping exact dimensions and acceptable quality, follow these steps using our dedicated compression tool:

  1. Choose your target size: Navigate to the specific compression page for your needs.
  2. Upload your image: The tool will load your photo directly in your browser. It does not upload your sensitive documents to any server.
  3. Wait for compression: The tool uses an iterative algorithm. It will try different JPEG quality levels until it finds the highest possible quality that still falls under your requested file size limit.
  4. Check dimensions: Notice that the physical dimensions of your photo have not changed. Only the file size has been reduced.
  5. Download: Click the download button to get your final, portal-ready image.

Does your photo also need to be resized?

If your photo isn't already the correct aspect ratio (e.g. 2x2 inches), you should crop it first. Our main tool lets you choose a preset, crop your face perfectly, and then compress the final file to exactly the KB you need.
